Government's green economy recommendations put waste management training on the agenda for business

The launch of the Government's Green Economy roadmap is set to place increased emphasis on waste or resource management skills training.

High level indications of regulatory and tax adjustments contained within the roadmap, expressly directed at driving transition to a green economy, make it apparent that organisations will need to ensure staff possess the skills and knowledge to meet legislative requirements.

Waste management is no longer a hidden, back room function for organisations; mounting disposal costs, the economic imperative to optimise use of resources, and growing pressure to demonstrate environmental responsibility to stakeholders mean that firms can no longer ignore this fundamental aspect of their operation.

Reed Learning is supporting these developments with the re-launch of a suite of courses from the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) this September. As one of the UK's largest providers of corporate training and development, Reed Learning has recognised clients' growing need for training that promotes a proactive and informed approach to waste and resource management.

"All private firms, educational establishments and charities produce waste and need to understand how to manage it in environmentally sound, sustainable ways - and meet the latest legislative requirements. The Government's recently published green economy roadmap acknowledges that new business models will be needed to 'reduce use of resources, waste, carbon emissions and other environmental impacts' and Reed Learning is determined to give our clients the most up to date knowledge and practical skills to achieve this" says Emma Hicks, Strategic Partnerships Manager at Reed Learning.

The revamped schedule will run from September 2011, offering clients inside and outside the waste management sector the skills they need to meet regulatory requirements and develop more sustainable waste management practices..

Quick facts:
• Eight different courses are available
• Topics span all levels from introduction to resource management and current legislation, through to hazardous waste management
• Delegates will come away with a comprehensive overview of their duties and responsibilities under the current laws

"Implementing measures to reduce and manage waste more sustainably can deliver business benefits and improve bottom line performance. CIWM is pleased to work with Reed to offer these courses that will help companies to reap these benefits" says CIWM chief executive Steve Lee.
