LONDON, 10th September 2009: LINE Communications, one of Europe's leading learning and communications providers has released the first of a series of virtual aircraft visits for British Airways. The innovative programme has been approved in concept for training by the Civil Aviation Authority, CAA, and is currently under review for full CAA approval

The virtual aircraft visit for the Boeing 777 aircraft was commissioned for new and returning British Airways Cabin Crew as well as those converting to the Boeing 777 from other aircraft types. Photography and video assets were produced by British Airways’ SEP Division and LINE was selected to design the programme and display technology.

The programme uses 360 degree panoramic zones linked together with video. The entire programme is built in Flash and uses an advanced 3-dimensional display of icons which launch instructional video segments within the zones. Inside a panoramic zone, users control their movement by using up to three different navigational methods. Progress through the aircraft can be made linearly or via an interactive map.

By offering Cabin Crew a reliable computer-based course the virtual visit will save British Airways an estimated £20,000 a year. The savings come from the transportation costs that are currently incurred visiting grounded aircraft.

Baljit Gill, Training Manager SEP & Avmed says, “We are really pleased with the 777 Virtual Aircraft Visit. This programme clearly shows the high level of support and investment that British Airways is willing to make towards passenger and Crew safety. LINE has created the most sophisticated training package we have used to date - and our SEP Training Instructors love it."

Andrew Joly, Design Director at LINE, says “The 777 Virtual Aircraft Visit is a major leap forward for LINE in terms of visual, navigational and technological innovation. Despite the complex challenges we faced, the programme successfully delivers a rich multimedia environment that gives users a powerful learning experience via a highly realistic virtual exploration".

Virtual visits for additional British Airways aircraft types are under development.
