Happy Ltd, the training company that includes Happy Computers, was last night named as the best company in the UK for the health and well-being for its staff. The award was given at announcement of the annual Best Workplaces list at Grosvenor House Hotel, organised by the Great Place to Work Institute. Happy was listed as one of the top 20 workplaces in the country for the fourth successive year.

The judges were impressed by the company's commitment to "life balance" for its employees and the genuine sense of caring throughout the organisation. In its 18 year history the company has never refused a request for flexible or part-time working. Their are many innovative ways of working. Every member of staff gets an annual cheque to spend on anything that would improve their well-being and Happy received a round of applause from the audience when it was revealed that staff can choose their line managers.

"We are thrilled to get this recognition", commented Managing Director Cathy Busani. "And we are very keen to help others. We are now working with dozens of organisations to help them create great work-places. It is very satisfying and remarkably easy, providing you have top level commitment, to improve well-being in a business."

One company that has benefited from the Happy treatment is software developers Cougar Automation. "Being trained at Happy makes such a difference", commented Chief Executive Clive Hutchinson. "As soon as you walk in you feel that it is a special place. Everyone is clearly relaxed, smiling and at ease. And as a result they are really focused on paying attention to the needs of us, their customers. So it is no surprise that everyone who is trained at Happy comes back raving about what a great time they had and about how much they learned."

"This is not about nice to have", continued Cathy. "It brings real financial benefits. As well as a more motivated and productive workforce, it improves retention and reduces recruitment costs." Happy rarely advertises for staff. The waiting list to join has reached 2,000 long and a single email is normally enough to get dozens of well qualified applicants.
