Early adopters reap greater benefits from Tin Can

E-learning specialists Transition says that those companies which stick to SCORM only will end up paying more overall – and lose out on benefits now.

But leading e-learning specialist Transition believes that now is the best time to start making the move. According to Transition’s Miles Corbett, clinging to SCORM could be stopping companies implementing more innovative and effective e-learning.

“One of the biggest benefits of Tin Can,” says Corbett, “is that it’s designed around the way learning works today. This means – amongst other things – courses that are mobile, social, online, offline, include game play and so on. Courses that work on every device in every situation. These are exciting, more effective ways to learn. These are the courses that instructional designers and e-learning developers want to build – but they are often held back by legacy SCORM systems.”

Transition believes that this hits organisations in two ways. The first is that their e-learning is less effective and more conservative than it could be. While this isn’t a direct cost, it can mean learning that delivers comparatively limited benefits. The second issue is that Tin Can is the future – and that continuing to develop around SCORM alone could also mean that organisations are accruing an ever-larger commitment to inevitable future redevelopment.

According to Corbett, Tin Can isn’t just “jam tomorrow”. “Tin Can is already being widely adopted,” says Corbett. “For example, it’s supported natively by e-learning tools such as Lectora. The latest version of Lectora, Lectora 11, fully supports the Tin Can API – it’s built right in.”

Corbett believes that Tin Can alone gives organisations a solid reason to move to Lectora 11. “Lectora 11 has lots of new features, a new interface and improved support for mobile devices. But the clincher is the support for and ongoing commitment to Tin Can.”

“Customers can get in touch with us at Transition about the possibilities or about buying or upgrading to Lectora 11. Not only will this enable them to benefit from Lectora 11’s new features – including Tin Can support – it means they will get free updates for a year. To check for eligibility to upgrade, customers simply need to call Transition.”

“In many ways,” concludes Corbett, “SCORM is now limiting what e-learning can be and what it needs to be. With the advent of cheap mobile computing, coupled with tools like Lectora and Tin Can, the possibilities are almost endless.”
