Towards Maturity Announces New 70:20:10 Performance Improvement Benchmarks

London, UKLearning NewsTowards Maturity

Since 2003, the Towards Maturity Benchmark Study™ has provided L&D leaders with confidential, individual feedback to improve the performance of their organisation, staff and L&D team. Now, the Personalised Benchmark Report™ received by all benchmark participants will include brand new indicators to demonstrate the extent to which L&D functions are implementing the 70:20:10 framework in their organisation.

70:20:10, originally credited to the work of McCall, Lombardo and Eichinger, suggests that 70% of lessons learned are through experience, 20% through other people and 10% through formal learning. The application of this ratio has gained in popularity in recent years to support more agile business practices and the increasingly self-directed learner.

The Towards Maturity Benchmark Study has been tracking and reporting on individual behaviours behind the 70:20:10 framework for some years. From September, three new performance indicators will be introduced into the Towards Maturity Personalised Benchmark Report, which is free to those who complete the Benchmark before 31 July. These new indicators will help L&D leaders track the extent to which they are supporting learning  against the three areas defined by the framework:

  • Experiential Learning Indicator
  • Social Learning Indicator
  • Formal Learning Indicator

These new indicators mean that participants will now receive scores on a total of 24 performance improvement benchmarks in their Personalised Benchmark Report which will  help them compare progress against peers and top performing L&D teams around the world. Other indicators include measures to support improving alignment, engagement, L&D capability, managing change, demonstrating value and more. Benchmarkers will also receive detailed analysis against 12 business output KPI's and 5 technology take-up indicators.

Laura Overton, Managing Director of Towards Maturity said,
"It is our goal to equip L&D leaders with trusted independent evidence to support their ongoing decision-making. Nearly half of this year’s benchmark participants are now applying the 70:20:10 framework, but it is clear that there is still confusion about what this means in practice. These new indices focus on the activities behind the framework; what works and what doesn’t. They will help L&D leaders identify where they can continue to target relevant activity to support performance in the heart of the workflow."

L&D professionals around the globe are able to confidentially benchmark their L&D strategy for free until 31st July at: www.towardsmaturity.org/benchmark. All participants will receive their Personalised Benchmark Report™ in September once all responses have been collated and analysed.

The free global Benchmark programme was established in 2003 and has been continually refined through the input of over 4,000 participants and the expert opinions of independent supporters. Free participation each year is made possible thanks to the support of Towards Maturity’s Ambassadors, who share a common belief that free, independent evidence should be available to all.
