Listen or become obsolete! Piers Lea appeals to European leaders and policy makers
Speaking on behalf of the European Learning Industry Group (ELIG) at the recent World of Learning Conference and Exhibition, Piers Lea, CEO of LINE Communications, one of Europe’s leading providers of learning and communications, called for the learning industry to be more active in getting the message across to leaders about the concrete business results that can be achieved by organisations.
'The use of innovation and technology for learning goes right to the heart of our ability to remain competitive in Europe,' said Piers, 'but at present business leaders and policy makers are just not getting it. Only 50% of boards take any active responsibility for learning & development within their organisations.'
As a demonstration of the type of 'compelling success stories' he feels top management should be seeing, Piers gave current examples of business results that have been achieved across a wide range of major organisations. Piers presented the results of a number of organisations ranging from Cisco through to Care Management Group (care homes) which included results that demonstrated 20% sales performance increases, a huge increase in training reach and millions of pounds saved.
He also referred to a recent longitudinal survey of 450 organisations conducted by Towards Maturity. The survey demonstrated clearly that those who are more mature in their use of learning innovation through technology derive greater benefits from it. In the top quartile of adopters, respondents report 35% reduction in study time. They can also deliver learning 43% faster and achieve an average 36% reduction in time to proven competency.
“These results should mean significant engagement from leadership”, said Piers, “yet so few have any understanding of what’s possible.”
On behalf of ELIG, Piers is offering these success stories to anyone who needs to get the ear of their leadership.
