Sustainability in L&D: Tess Robinson from LAS, is presenting at Learning Technologies 2025 this April in London, on the action L&D professionals can take to support a more sustainable future.

L&D teams have a unique role to play in driving sustainability that goes well beyond reducing paper use. Digital tools and platforms come with hidden environmental costs, and this session examines how L&D professionals can take action to support a more sustainable future. By adopting energy-efficient practices and influencing organisational attitudes, L&D can work towards a better future both inside the department and beyond it.

For L&D, sustainability is about a lot more than recycling. It’s about rethinking the environmental impact of everything we do, including the digital tools and platforms we rely on in L&D. From data farms powering AI to the carbon emissions of video hosting platforms, what we do has unseen consequences. This session highlights the urgent need for L&D to take responsibility, model change, and work towards environmentally conscious practices.

Learning Technologies Conference Chair, Donald H Taylor, said: “Explore practical strategies for reducing the digital carbon footprint of your learning programmes, adopting energy-efficient tools, and creating sustainable working practices. This session will also consider how L&D can influence broader organisational attitudes, whether through top-down initiatives or grassroots action. Learn how to align your efforts with emerging research, legislation, and expectations for a more sustainable future.”

Topics:

  • Assessing the environmental impact of digital platforms
  • Strategies for reducing your digital carbon footprint
