Workers build AI skills as demand weakens for AI-exposed jobs

Workers continue to invest in AI skills while demand remains weaker for occupations most exposed to AI in the US labour market, according to the latest AI Labor Market Tracker from Revelio Labs. 

The report analyses labour market data to track how AI is reshaping skills, hiring and work across the US. Learning News selected five indicators from the report to examine AI upskilling, hiring, job transformation, organisational growth and hiring efficiency.

AI upskilling: 31%

Are workers building capability?

AI-related certifications accounted for 31% of newly reported professional certifications, indicating continued investment in AI-related skills.

AI hiring: -42%

Is demand changing for AI-exposed occupations?

Compared with October 2022, demand for the most AI-exposed occupations is 42% lower than for the least AI-exposed occupations. AI-exposed occupations are jobs containing activities that current AI systems could plausibly perform, rather than jobs developing AI.

Job transformation: +8.4 percentage points

Is capability being applied?

The activities performed within jobs changed by 8.4 percentage points over the past year. The measure tracks how work is changing inside existing jobs.

AI adopter growth: +27%

Are AI adopters growing faster?

AI-adopting firms recorded headcount growth 27% higher than comparable non-adopters.

Hiring efficiency: 5.05

Is capability easier or harder to find?

Employers publish an average of 5.05 job postings for every external hire. More job postings are now required for each successful external hire.

Work and capability change

The five indicators show workers continuing to build AI capability while work changes inside existing jobs. AI adopters continue to grow faster than comparable non-adopters, recruitment is becoming less efficient and demand remains weaker for AI-exposed occupations than before generative AI.
