VSTEP secures new investor to expand maritime simulation business
Maritime simulation provider VSTEP has secured new investment from Dutch industrial investor Pindustry to expand its international training technology business, as demand grows for simulation-based workforce training across commercial shipping and defence.
Maritime simulation provider VSTEP has sold a majority stake to Dutch industrial investor Pindustry, with the company's management team retaining a shareholding and continuing to lead the business.
The transaction brings new investment to the Rotterdam-based company as demand grows for simulation technology used in maritime training, defence and commercial shipping. Financial terms were not disclosed.
VSTEP develops the NAUTIS maritime simulation platform, which is used by maritime training providers, fleet operators, port authorities, navies and coast guards in more than 70 countries. Customers include Damen Shipyards, Fugro, the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Swedish Navy, Viking Cruises and the Dutch pilotage service.
The company said growth in digitalisation, safety requirements and international regulation is increasing demand for simulation environments that integrate with bridge systems, radar and electronic navigation equipment. It is also applying AI to functions including scenario generation, automated competency assessment and user experience.
Fabian van den Berg, chief executive of VSTEP, said the investment would support the company's next phase of international growth while adding strategic expertise.
Pindustry invests in Dutch manufacturing and technology businesses and is affiliated with the Verder Group. The investor said VSTEP's software platform, recurring revenue model and position in the maritime simulation market supported its investment decision. It also cited growing demand from naval organisations and inland shipping.
The Van den Berg family, which founded VSTEP in 2002, has transferred its majority shareholding as part of the deal. Fabian van den Berg, chief operating officer Myrna van den Berg, chief commercial officer Tije Vos and chief technology officer Maarten Meulemans remain shareholders and continue to manage the business.
VSTEP develops simulation software and integrated training systems that support competence development, operational decision-making and bridge resource management across maritime operations. Its NAUTIS platform combines simulation software, instructor tools, scenario creation and supporting hardware in a single training environment.
