Elearnity challenges corporate LMS direction

Cirencester, UKLearning NewsFosway

Research from eLearnity challenged corporates to rethink their approach and commitment to Learning Management Systems (LMS).

eLearnity, Europe 's leading independent Learning Analyst, today challenged corporates to rethink their approach and commitment to Learning Management Systems (LMS). Based on research, including analysis and in-depth private roundtable discussions with over 20 major European Companies, eLearnity has concluded that:

  1. Large corporates, particularly in the UK and Europe , are generally too slow in embracing LMSs and too limited in their aspiration for them. For large organisations, LMSs are fundamental to enabling a viable and sustainable future for corporate learning

  2. Many corporate LMS implementations are too focused on reducing the admin burden and not sufficiently focused on enabling the business to meet its future challenges

  3. LMS decisions are often plagued by corporate politics, poor organisational alignment and a lack of strategic understanding and vision, resulting in long and expensive procurement processes with a limited chance of delivering real value

  4. Corporates struggle with a lack of skilled implementation resources and poor support , focusing too heavily on technology, and insufficiently on process and cultural change

"Our analysis indicates that the LMS is still under-valued by large organisations" said David Wilson, eLearnity's founder and Managing Director. "Learning Management is interpreted too parochially, and LMS implementation is not aligned with the forces of change within the business and within learning. We see the need for a significant shift in thinking and behaviour from the Learning & Development and HR communities in order to deliver the change and value that an LMS promises, but which large organisations frequently fail to extract in reality." He also added that "We also believe that large organisations should employ significantly more experienced LMS resources to lead large LMS projects and ensure their long term success"

Learning Management is one of a number of core research areas for eLearnity, which ran a major Symposium event specifically focused on corporate LMS in December 2004, and included in-depth roundtable discussions on LMS selection and procurement, implementation, enterprise-level issues including integration and HR systems, and driving real value from LMSs. eLearnity has also published a number of public papers and articles on these topics.

eLearnity is also currently planning a corporate collaborative research project looking in more detail at key issues around Learning Management Strategy, including frameworks for analysing and structuring the impact of business change forces on corporate learning strategy, integrating performance, capability and learning management, learning and knowledge management, and the drivers for learning management systems strategy.
