The One Minute Manager Gets Fit at Last

New Ken Blanchard book takes leadership out of the office and into the gym.

Like many of even the most dedicated of us, bestselling business author Ken Blanchard has struggled frequently with his weight. Despite helping organisations get healthy for years, Blanchard’s own personal fitness eluded him.  But now, at the age of seventy-three, he’s finally cracked it; his latest book, Fit at Last, which he has co-authored with his fitness coach Tim Kearin, reveals how he finally dropped over thirty pounds in a year and made lasting improvements to his health.

The solution was actually quite simple: Blanchard and Kearin took the same techniques Ken has used to transform organisations worldwide, in particular Situational Leadership® II (SLII®), and moved them on from the office and into the gym. It worked: Blanchard was finally able to make a firm commitment to his health.

“I couldn’t believe I’d not thought of it before!” says Blanchard. “But why shouldn’t the same concepts I’d been using for years to help people lead organisations also help me stick to my programme? So we set SMART goals, diagnosed what developmental level I was at in six key fitness areas, and then decided on what type of leadership I needed to get me to the next level. Using SLII® I was able to stick to a fitness programme for the first time and it’s added a spring to my step, a smile to my face, and years to my life.”

Blanchard’s book also outlines six principles to help anyone wanting to lose weight:

  1. Have a purpose with compelling reasons
  2. Ask someone with a mutual commitment to your success to help you
  3. Learn about the benefits of Situational Leadership II
  4. Develop age-appropriate goals
  5. Set up and use a support system to help hold you accountable
  6. Develop measurable milestones to reach for to help you stay motivated
