New 'green IT' qualification launched: accredited approach to best practice
A new accredited qualification in environmentally-aware IT best practice has been launched by the British Computer Society (BCS) and will be delivered by the UK's leading provider of technical training, QA-Xpertise. Developed in collaboration with industry experts the programme will provide the skills and knowledge to answer today's challenges in a way that is both cost-effective and resource-conscious.
The programme will help organisations answer the questions they face in today's cost- and climate-sensitive conditions, such as:
- How to maximise energy efficiency and reduce costs associated with power and cooling while maintaining the level of IT service expected by the organisation
- How to balance flexible working requirements with shifting the burden of heating and lighting from one centralised office space to many less-efficient homes, and
- Whether increased use of virtualisation software enables reduction of hardware costs and office space.
Director of Professional Best Practice at QA-Xpertise, Jeff Payne, explains; "Creating a Green IT policy isn't just about minimising the impact your business has on the environment in the short term, it's about developing a long-term approach that identifies the key issues for industry and allows organisations to safeguard both their economic future and the future of our planet. We're providing a foundation level of skills that will enable businesses to take an effective economic and ecological approach to IT moving forward."
Jeremy Barlow, Product Development Manager at the BCS adds; "This is an important new qualification and QA-Xpertise has worked closely with us to support the development of the programme. Being an environmentally aware business isn't just about recycling paper, it isn't just about turning monitors off when you go home in the evening, and it's not just about 'talking the talk'. Organisations need to know how to comply with ever-tightening legislation, how they can create significant cost-efficiencies, and how to balance the internal and external economic drivers they face. We're confident that individuals that complete this qualification will be able to develop a strategy that will bring significant benefit to their business."
Available from Spring 2009, the qualification will be accredited by ISEB and available across QA-Xpertise's UK training centres. Visit www.qa.com/green for more information or call 0844 871 2080.
