The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has selected Pearson VUE to deliver a computer-based pilot of its Aptitude Test for candidates planning to undertake the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC).

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has selected Pearson VUE to deliver a computer-based pilot of its Aptitude Test for candidates planning to undertake the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC).

Established by the Bar Council in 2006, the BSB regulates barristers called to the Bar in England and Wales and is responsible for setting education and training requirements.

Prior to appointing Pearson VUE, the BSB conducted extensive research to establish which test would accurately predict candidates’ performance on the BPTC. The decision follows a recommendation made by Chair of the Bar Vocational Course Working Group, Derek Wood QC, in the Wood Report of 2008 in order to help improve the BPTC.

The BSB will pilot the Aptitude Test with the intent of launching the live programme in 2012. The sophistication of the Pearson VUE testing system will ensure that minimal administrative burden is placed on the BSB, and will provide candidates with extensive access to the test via utilisation of Pearson VUE’s highly secure global network of test centres.

Dr John Carrier, Chair of the BSB Education and Training Committee, said:
“Given the prestige of our programme, and the BSB’s aim to ensure the good regulation of the BPTC and the maintenance of high standards, Pearson VUE was selected to work with us in the development and piloting of the test following a rigorous and competitive selection process. They have an excellent and proven track record and we have been very impressed by the high quality of their work and their professionalism and integrity. We look forward to continuing working with them as leaders in this field.”

Suzana Lopes, Pearson VUE, VP EMEA Sales and Marketing, added:
“We pride ourselves on providing personalised testing solutions to ensure that the client and candidate receive the most effective and efficient service possible. The fact that we have been appointed to deliver a further pilot of the Bar Standards Board’s computer-based Aptitude Test proves our capability and dedication to innovation.”
