Using mobile support systems to boost sales

Herman Miller, a global office furniture brand, has implemented a mobile performance support application, developed by Ontuitive, for its sales teams and has been invited to the upcoming Learning Technologies Conference to deliver a presentation about it.

Herman Miller’s Jeremy Smith will take the stage at the Learning Technologies Conference on day one, January 29, to talk about how his company set about implementing its mobile performance support application and the results achieved by the business.

“The problem faced by Herman Miller is typical in many businesses. An expanding and constantly evolving product range relied on us constantly training our sales teams with the latest product information. And the faster our product range changed the faster we need to train our sales teams,” said Jeremy Smith.

“Using traditional elearning courses meant that there was always a delay in getting new information to our sales teams and we started to find that each sale was taking more client visits and calls, as sales people would need to return later with the most up-to-date information after they’d taken the elearning course - which itself took up valuable sales time.”

“It was clear that we needed to provide sales with up to date product information via mobile devices at the moment they needed it and while they were with the client. And to do this we needed to move from a course environment to a performance support environment. This journey is what we’ll be talking about at Learning Technologies 2013.”

There were several key considerations for Herman Miller’s new approach to work: moving learners’ mindset from courses to resources; using a single-source content model to ensure delivery in multiple modes to multiple devices; using the appeal of mobile to generate learner demand; and setting and managing user expectations. Jeremy Smith will also talk about lessons learned and mistakes to avoid.

'Using mobile support systems to boost sales', by Jeremy Smith, Herman Miller, takes place on January 29, 15.30 to 16.30. More details, including conference booking information, is available on the Learning Technologies Conference web site. Jeremy will also deliver a 30-minute presentation 'Performance Support at Herman Miller: the first four years' at 12.30 pm during the Learning Technologies Exhibition on both January 29 and 30, in the Performance Support Theatre at stand 69.

Ontuitive, the developer of Herman Miller’s mobile performance support application, is exhibiting at the Learning Technologies Exhibition and will also be demonstrating the application at their exhibition booth - stand 69.
