The recently held Tata Interactive Learning Forum (TLF) examined the role of learning and skills in enabling companies to stay competitive.

The TLF 2009 was held on March 19, 2009 at the Andaz, London, attracting noted learning industry specialists and thought leaders who engaged in highly interactive sessions on the role of learning in today’s economic climate. The TLF 2009 witnessed speaker sessions by business, HR, and learning professionals who presented case studies and proven strategies for building organizational learning and skills. The highlight of the event was an interactive, multiplayer simulation on Change Management that required delegates to make a variety of HR & Personnel decisions in a changing and competitive environment.

Addressing the Forum on the “Role of skills and learning in challenging times” were John Cridland, Deputy Director General - Confederation of British Industry; Peter Block, Executive Director – Broadcast Training & Skills Regulator; Peter Butler, Head of L&D – British Telecom and Dennis Reid, Chairman of Retail Performance Specialists. A panel of experts including Helen Harris-Rees, Head of L&D – DHL Express UK; Jackie Lawlor, Head of People Development – Royal Mail Group; Dennis Reid, Chairman – Retail Performance Specialists; Sarah Herd, Manager, Education, Training & Development – Jaguar Land Rover; Chris Rowles, Head of Training – Ashorne Hill; and Alison Williams, Group E-learning Business Consultant – BUPA, supported each presentation.

The Conference Chair, Mr. Gordon Bull – Learning Architect and Strategist said, “As Chairman of the event, I was impressed with the speakers perspectives on the theme and how they linked this to their Industry. Their presentations covered a wide range of key issues impacting businesses today and illustrated just how important training, when aligned to the needs of the organization, can make a real difference to improving overall business performance. Judging by the level of interest shown by the audience, their active participation in the simulation exercises and the questions asked, everyone in the room was fully engaged. Their engagement continued after the formal Forum into dinner, where conversations ranged far and wide over the issues of the day.” As Jackie Lawlor summed up, “It was the diverse mix of topics that made it a stimulating event.”

Alan Samuel, who heads UK Sales at TIS added, “We believe all the participants gained significant insights and new perspectives on learning strategies from the interaction at the event. Changing a company’s strategy cannot happen overnight, it is a journey – and the TLF is an important step in that journey.”
