Imagine a room, locked for 45 minutes, with a group of learners attempting to learn and "game" their way out, collaborating and solving learning challenges in order to escape. Escape Rooms have become an intriguing form of high-engagement recreation, so can we apply them to the world of workplace learning?

Elliott Masie intends to find out - he has just announced that conference participants will design and experiment with an Escape Room for Learning at Learning 2016, to be held from October 23 to 26 in Orlando, Florida.

“We are building a unique ‘Escape Room for Learning’ project at Learning 2016. This is one of the most unusual recreational activities that people are exploring. So, why not take this gamification model and ask a collection of our participants to design our very own Learning Escape Room?” said Masie, Host and Curator of Learning 2016.

Participants will be given a room that can be almost fully sealed (with a safety exit), some materials and scenery, and they will be tasked with creating and experimenting with a Learning Escape Room. They will have an opportunity to help design the Escape Room learning challenges and also to participate in this high-intensity simulation, looking at how the time-based Escape Room mode can impact learning and risk taking.

According to Masie, “We believe that we can design Escape Room activities for content across the spectrum, ranging from Leadership to Delegation to Procurement to IT Systems and more. There will be lock boxes, scenery, and a fun time-pressure element.”

The Escape Room for Learning project is being coordinated by two recent graduates of the 30 Under 30 Program: Mandi Christensen and Dan Laicha.

Learning 2016 takes place October 23-26 in Orlando, FL. It is produced by The Learning CONSORTIUM, a collaborative of 200 global corporations, focused on improving workplace learning and training. Hosted and curated by Elliott Masie, Learning 2016 brings together several thousand learning professionals as they focus on the changing nature of workplace education and development. Learning 2016 keynote speakers include: Anderson Cooper, anchor of CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360°; U.S. Astronaut Scott Kelly; Actor George Takei; Filmmaker Tiffany Shlain; Elliott Masie; and more!
