8th August 2001, Kingston-upon-Thames: Maris Technologies announce the launch of 'Foundations', a new CD-ROM published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc, and the first in the series of nine CDs called Interactions: Exploring the Functions of the Human Body.

Based in part on Wiley's market leading textbooks in Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Grabowski, Foundations explores the fundamental concepts of human anatomy and physiology at all levels of body organisation, and uses the latest animation and interactive techniques to enhance the learning process.
Key features of the Foundations programme include:
 Over 3 hours of animated physiological processes
 Interactive exercises and illustrated anatomy overviews
 Case studies that relate theory to real-life clinical situations.
 Concept maps to illustrate how content inter-relates
 Dynamic navigation, searching and indexing
 Pronunciation dictionary and functional notebook
 Lesson creation for classroom use.
 Functionality within the familiar navigational interface of a web browser
 Open standards – Browser/XML/Java – to future-proof the product

The Foundations program was developed using Maris Technologies' XML based elearning engine edugen™ – a cross-platform technology (PC and Mac) which provides a flexible structure to enhance navigation and presentation and deliver a self-study learning application. Edugen™ is based upon the open standards eXtensible Mark-up Language (XML). It enables the display of text, illustrations, animations and interactive content and is deliverable on CD and/or within a local area network internet browser environment.

"Using Edugen we were able to convert existing material into courseware quickly and cost effectively. This left us with quality time to concentrate on the detailed Java and Flash interactive elements to enhance the programmel" says Julian Clayton Chief Executive Maris Technologies.

Launched at the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society Conference in Hawaii last month, Foundations was enthusiastically embraced by the attendees. In a teaching workshop held during the conference, Foundations was introduced as a model for reshaping the way content is delivered and integrated into courses, encouraging participants to enhance traditional lecture formats, develop and enrich distant learning modalities, and promote active learning to students through the rich and unique delivery of the content on the CD-ROM.

Wiley anticipates that Foundations will have a significant impact in the marketplace, complementing and supporting adoptions of the popular Tortora and Grabowski titles. Adopters can choose to have Foundations bundled with the Tortora textbooks. Pricing options for students and institutions wishing to adopt Foundations as a standalone product are also available.

"Foundations appears destined to succeed, based on the positive response and actual orders closed at the HAPS meeting in Maui," commented Bonnie Roesch, Senior Editor at Wiley. "The quality of Maris’s work is terrific, and the flexibility and speed of development provided by Maris’s Edugen engine impacts positively on our ability to deliver a product that helps teachers teach and students learn. We look forward to working with them on the rest of the Interactions Series. Together, Wiley and Maris have set a new standard of excellence for the next generation of multimedia in anatomy and physiology."
