Institute launches military membership scheme

Following consultations with the Ministry of Defence, the Institute of IT Training (IITT) is launching a special membership programme for training personnel in the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force

The IITT military membership scheme is being launched officially at the Training, Education and Simulation Conference and Exhibition (ITEC), taking place on 1st May at the ExCel Centre in London's Docklands.

"The Ministry of Defence has hundreds of full-time training personnel who are looking for professional recognition and the Institute has been extremely helpful in working with the military in providing the services and recognition that they are looking for," explained John Hall MBE, a non-executive director of the IITT

"ITEC is an international event covering all aspects of training, education and simulation, which is returning to London after ten years after touring major European cities," he said. "And, although some of the event is devoted to military training - which provides an ideal opportunity to launch the IITT's military membership scheme - ITEC's charter reflects all types of training technology, whoever is the user."

Colin Steed, chief executive of the Institute, commented: "For some time, members of the UK military who are, or have recently been, engaged in training related areas have not had a mechanism that would recognise their internal courses and give a direct path to membership of a professional body.

"In particular, technical training officers and NCOs have found it difficult to acquire professional status elsewhere without formal, higher, academic qualifications.

"The Institute of IT Training is now able to provide that path and most training personnel would find that they can become members of the Institute at the Senior Associate or full Member grade," he added.

"Military personnel who join the Institute receive external recognition of their professional status that authorises designated letters after their name. We believe that this will give those people a significant advantage when leaving the Service and seeking civilian employment."

All military members of the IITT receive access to their own area on the Institute's website, their own Forum area and online seminar programme. Additionally, the Institute is investigating how it can help military personnel find work when their service ends.
