e2train releases whitepaper on the impact of four generations within the workplace
Leading provider of learning and talent management solutions, e2train, has released its latest whitepaper - ‘The Changing Dynamics of the Workplace – The Impact of Each of the Different Generations’. The whitepaper is part of a series of whitepapers authored by Rob Caul, CEO of e2train and 81Boxes, and follows the previously published paper - ‘Seven Steps to Grow from Within’.
The latest whitepaper examines the make-up of today’s workforce and the different needs and aspirations of the four different generations all working side by side. These include the traditionalists born between 1925 and 1945; the baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964; Generation X born between 1965 and 1981; and Generation Y or the millennials born after 1982.
The whitepaper examines:
- The different characteristics of each generation from the traditionalists who tend to be characterised by a sense of duty and loyalty to the more upwardly mobile baby boomers; the focus on hard work and self-reliance of Generation X; and Generation Y whose era has been defined by huge technology advances and the age of mass media.
- What these different aspirations mean for talent management programmes. In the paper, Rob Caul provides a series of recommendations as to how talent management strategies can reflect the changing workforce. These include:
- The need to avoid the over-customisation of talent management strategies;
- The importance of a clearly defined career ladder;
- The need to prioritise leadership skills;
- The need to have a dynamic talent management process, where employees are moved from business to business, office to office, and challenge to challenge; and
- How Generation Y can be used to close skills gaps and the importance of tapping into the skills and knowledge of older generations. - The paper also assesses the changing face of L&D and key developments, such as the growing role of technology and yet the continued popularity of classroom training. The paper also argues for greater flexibility in training today and the important role Learning Management System (LMS) platforms are playing in ensuring that skills and best practices are shared between generations and in generating a clear insight and evaluation of individual skills. The important issue of succession planning between generations is also addressed.
“A strong, sustainable organisation draws its strength from all employees - no matter what generation”, said Rob Caul, CEO of e2train and 81Boxes. “The key challenge is designing talent management and learning strategies that reflect this reality and are able to engage and secure optimum performance from all individuals - no matter what their age or generation. I’m confident that this white paper will serve as an important tool in reaching this goal.”
