What does it take to make an industry? What are the ingredients for success?

Colin Steed has possibly contributed as much as anyone to help shape the Learning and Development industry. Colin works quietly behind the scenes, rarely in the spotlight, yet, his innovations have had a profound influence on Learning and Development and the careers of countless people.

Colin is the innovator behind a host of L&D industry firsts, including its media outlets, early research, first events, support for charities, establishing its standards, qualifications, first awards programme, and has authored two books recognised as ‘ahead of their time’: Developing Web-based Training and Facilitating Live Online Learning.

Colin Steed’s career achievements include:

Magazines: IT Training; Management Training and Development; IT Skills
Media: Learning News; Learning Now TV
Books: Developing Web-based Training and Facilitating Live Online Learning.
Events: National Trainers Conference (renamed as Learning Live)
Awards: IT Training Awards / The Learning Awards / Outstanding Contribution to Learning
Standards: Institute of IT Training / Learning and Performance Institute

Earlier in 2024 Colin Steed’s achievements were publicly recognised after the LPI renamed the Outstanding Contribution to Learning Award after Colin.

These days Colin is still working and active at the heart of the L&D industry producing Learning Now TV, which has run for nine years featuring interviews with L&D practitioners.

To celebrate Colin Steed's career and long list of achievements, Rob Clarke from Learning News spent the day with Colin and chatted to some of the people who have worked with him over the years. Peter Labrow, who worked with Colin on many projects edited and produced the programme.
