New research from Evolve Authoring reveals that today’s learners want content that scrolls and is delivered in the same way they are used to interacting with on the web.

Customers of Evolve Authoring, the revolutionary new authoring tool for creating stylish, responsive HTLM5 e-learning content were surveyed to discover what trends are influencing e-learning design and what today’s instructional designers want from authoring tools. The overwhelming majority said they want to be able to easily develop fully responsive content that scrolls and works on any platform or device.

Wesley Atkinson, Co-founder and Director of Evolve Authoring, said: “Instructional designers want to work with tools that enable them to deliver a consumer-grade learning experience to users. Given most websites scroll and scrolling has become the easy and natural way to interact with touchscreens in the multi-device age, it’s not surprising that responsive design and scrolling are at the top of most ID’s wish lists.

“Being able to design one version of content that works on any platform can save huge amounts of time. The benefits of scrolling are clear cut too with research from the Software Usability Research Laboratory showing users can digest long, scrolling pages faster than paginated ones, and learners are also more immersed when they have the freedom to move around.”

Beth Hall, Head of Group Learning at Cotton On Group, added: “When we were searching for a new tool we wanted something that created learning content in a way that people were used to seeing and interacting with on the web. That meant scrolling rather than ‘click next’ learning. Evolve is so easy to use and cuts the need to create a design for the e-learning first – we just enter our content straight into the templates and it creates itself. We’ve already created 700 learning modules and won two awards in Australia for the content we’ve written using the tool.”

100% of Evolve Authoring’s customers said Evolve has made creating e-learning content for modern learners easier. Responsive design, live previews and scrolling layouts were cited as being the three most innovative features of the product. Nine of out 10 respondents rate Evolve better than other tools for creating scrolling layouts and 85% said Evolve is better for building HTML5 responsive design, with the remainder saying Evolve is on a par with other leading authoring tools.

Daryl Hedley, Co-founder and Director of Evolve Authoring, said:“We’ve built Evolve from the ground-up using the Adapt framework and so it doesn’t carry any of the baggage that restricts the usability and power to create inspiring content that older tools have. Users are actively involved in our product roadmap and are continuing to shape the development of exciting features like built-in gamification, live preview, interactive branching video questions, review and annotation functionality for collaborative content design.”
