Coaches and mentors from all over the UK - and even abroad - are to meet in February to share the most up-to-date research in this dynamic industry. The event, to be held at Sheffield Hallam University on February 9, is the fifth in a series of successful Mentoring and Coaching Research days. These are held jointly by the university's Mentoring and Coaching Research Unit and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC).

Host Dr Bob Garvey said almost half the available places had already been booked and urged anyone who wanted to reserve a place to act fast.

"It's a great opportunity for people to discuss their research ideas or proposals, present their research or simply catch up with what's happening in research," he said.

"It's also a good opportunity to network with practitioners, consultants and researchers in the field," he added.

Dr Garvey said he and his colleagues had originally intended to run one Coaching and Mentoring Research Day a year - but the event had proved so popular they now ran two.

The agenda for each Coaching and Mentoring Research Day is created by the people who attend, so each one is unique. So far, topics for the next one will include:
- coaching and mentoring in the health service
- online coaching competence
- benefits and outcomes of coaching in relation to reducing workplace stress

Dr Garvey said the last Mentoring and Coaching Research Day had been a great success. "We had coaches and mentors from the business, health service and education sectors there and it was a great opportunity to explore the differences and similarities between coaching and mentoring in these different fields," he said.

The standard fee is £100 with special rates for EMCC members of £50, and £25 for postgraduate students. The fee includes refreshments and lunch.
