International Journal of Mentoring & Coaching launched

The European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC) has launched the International Journal of Mentoring & Coaching: an e-journal compiling the world's leading coaching and mentoring research as well as commentary on professional practice issues. The International Journal of Mentoring & Coaching contains contributions from many eminent academics and commentators.

The European Coaching and Mentoring Council (EMCC) has launched the International Journal of Mentoring & Coaching: an e-journal compiling the world's leading coaching and mentoring research as well as commentary on professional practice issues. The International Journal of Mentoring & Coaching contains contributions from many eminent commentators and academic institutions, including submissions from, Sheffield Hallam University, Queen Mary University of London, The University of Stockholm and California State University.

Alison Carter, Chair of the editorial panel: "The EMCC exists to promote good practice in mentoring and coaching across Europe and is publishing this e-journal to bring together the many research projects and papers emerging on the subject of coaching and mentoring."

The EMCC's editorial team has brought together an impressive selection of articles for publication in the first edition and are offering two of the papers free of charge so that both the professional and academic communities can experience the quality and value offered to subscribers.

About the European Mentoring and Coaching Council

The European Mentoring and Coaching Council was created in 2002 to promote industry-wide good practice. Its executive committee is made up of some of the most experienced figures in the coaching and mentoring industry.

Over the last two years, the EMCC's major consultative research project on coaching and mentoring competencies has involved sourcing and collating both national and international standards for coaching and mentoring competence.

The consultation process has been extended to a range of participants using both face-to-face interviews and an innovative online process. Broad support for the project has come from the main professional bodies, training organisations, consultancies and academic institutions operating in the coaching and mentoring industry who have all supplied representatives to complete an extensive online feedback process.

Forty representatives from the coaching and mentoring community have contributed to the broad project and from this group a large 'expert panel' of 26 representatives of the coaching and mentoring industry took part in the online process. These experts were mostly drawn from the UK, however, input was also provided by representatives from US, Australian and European professional coaching bodies. The online process is now being refined to support the second stage of the project. This will involve collecting feedback from buyers of services across Europe as well as training organisations and service providers. In this way the whole coaching and mentoring community will be able to contribute to the ongoing work on the development of standards and industry benchmarks conducted by the EMCC.

The EMCC's aims are:

- The on-going development and application of a widely agreed statement of ethical and professional standards in coaching and mentoring

- Creation and support of forums, using traditional and new media, for dialogue and mutual learning across the spectrum of mentoring and coaching

- Lobbying, where appropriate, to support socially responsible coaching and mentoring in all sectors of employment and community development

- Stimulation of research and benchmarking

- Maintenance of an extensive library of materials on coaching and mentoring

- Respecting the wide range of perspectives and approaches to mentoring, coaching and the complementary professions that may be appropriate for different contexts

- Recognising the continuous professional development needs, and valid options for meeting those needs, of all levels of experience of coaching and mentoring, from full time professionals to occasional volunteers, within an appropriate framework of standards

- Recognising the needs of consumers of coaching and mentoring services for an authoritative, impartial and objective source of information on the quality of service provision available in their geographical area Improving communications between providers of mentoring and coaching services; their clients and customers, both individual and organisational and academics engaged in the search for good practice in coaching and mentoring

- Providing a membership forum for all those involved in the wide variety of the applications of coaching and mentoring, while placing its greatest emphasis on those areas, which are not already well represented by other bodies.
