The British Army's Recruiting Group use blended e-learning to improve the effectiveness of the recruiter development process
Major Peter Handibode, currently a Staff Officer attached to Headquarters Recruiting Group, part of the British Army's Recruiting & Training Division, will be informing delegates at the Learning Technologies 2008 Conference of how the Army School of Recruiting (ASR) has recently developed and delivered blended content to great success - with the help of Epic.
During Major Peter Handibode's time with the Army, he has been involved in both training and operations and served in a number of posts in the UK and overseas. His responsibilities include: recruiting standards, training and leading the development of Recruiting Group's e-learning programme.
The ASR required a programme to develop a consistent understanding of the new One Army Recruiting (OAR) process for staff across both the Regular and Territorial Army. Their intensive classroom-based course for recruiters had become too full, so the challenge was to move some of the learning content online to better prepare students for the classroom course.
Major Peter Handibode's speech will outline how the programme met their key objective, which was to improve the effectiveness of recruiting - by raising the knowledge and skills of potential careers advisors, by giving recruiters a better understanding of the roles within the Army and, in the longer-term, by placing the right candidate in the right role first time.
"One of the changes in approach was to focus on the potential applicant, rather than simply meeting targets, an approach which did not ensure long-term retention. Fitting the right person to the right job was key, said Major Handibode. "It was also essential that that the programme met the needs of all learners, including the Army's civilian workforce, and fully integrated with existing material."
The ASR appointed Epic, the award-winning bespoke and blended e-learning solutions provider, to produce a blended programme which would use face-to-face and e-learning approaches to best effect. The programme added value to the classroom training by maximising the role of trainers and enabling them to do their jobs much more efficiently.
The programme includes an online simulation of the recruiting process - SiRE (simulated recruiting environment) is an innovative use of assessment and e-learning in the classroom. The programme forms part of the suite of e-learning Epic has developed for ASR's Recruiter Training series, and includes 14 case studies offering a wealth of resources to the trainers and increasing the practice opportunities for the learners.
