Under strict regulation from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA), Oxford University Hospitals NHS required a comprehensive LMS to enhance the quality of competence among the workforce to support the delivery of first class patient care.

As one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the UK, Oxford University Hospitals NHS (OUH) is a world renowned centre for clinical excellence. The Trust, comprising of four hospitals, provides a wide range of clinical services, specialist services (including cardiac, cancer, musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation), medical education, training and research.

“The provision of exceptional patient care is the ultimate goal for OUH” explains Ian Mackenzie, Head of Wider Workforce Education, whose team is responsible for delivering training to the Trusts 11,000 staff across the four hospital sites. In order to achieve this, OUH required a Learning Management System which could provide both comprehensive live web based reporting that could be accessed directly by managers 24/7, alongside the capability to deliver an extensive statutory and mandatory training programme.

To understand the systems full potential, Ian Mackenzie worked closely alongside Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, who have been strong advocates of the system for over 5 years. Both Trusts have found ES Compliance Manager to be one of the most beneficial tools in the system for managing staff competency levels as Ian Mackenzie notes “Not only does ES give us the confidence that our staff are fully compliant and equipped to deliver first class patient care, it helps us reduce the cost of insurance premiums (NHSLA), so we are delivering better quality standards at a reduced cost.”

After a swift implementation process, OUH went live with ES LMS in June 2012. Ian Mackenzie is delighted with the results so far, “During the implementation process the ES team were incredibly helpful and supportive, and continue to be so.  They understand our organisation and they helped make what could have been a very stressful process run smoothly.  So far, since we launched 2 months ago, user feedback has been fantastic.”

In the first 2 months of ES LMS being live, a phenomenal 20,000 assessments were completed, proving successful user adoption very early on.  This activity directly replaced 20,000 training attends, tested competence and released over 1000 days back to delivering clinical care.

“Working with such a leading and forward thinking organisation as Oxford University Hospitals ensures that our software solutions are extremely focused on delivering a high return on investment for the healthcare sector,” comments Henry Jodrell, Managing Director of Enterprise Study.
