The National Trust for Scotland “helps shape our sense of place and identity” and called on the services of eCom to create a central resource that could provide staff and volunteers throughout Scotland with a comprehensive, engaging and formative induction tool about The Trust as a whole.

The National Trust for Scotland is Scotland's largest membership organisation with 450 full-time and 700 seasonal staff supported by around 3000 volunteers. The full range of skills and expertise, both traditional and modern is both varied and vast, but necessary to the continuing success of The Trust.

The National Trust for Scotland "helps shape our sense of place and identity" and called on the services of eCom to create a central resource that could provide staff and volunteers throughout Scotland with a comprehensive, engaging and formative induction tool about The Trust as a whole. With such a vast, geographically dispersed workforce eLearning was seen as the ideal vehicle to achieve this objective. The end result was an eLearning induction module that accounted for all the Trust's departments and how each played an important role in the overall success of the Trust.

The induction eLearning materials lend themselves perfectly to the concept of personalised learning and ensure a tailored learning experience, deployed to create effective, engaging experiences, the content moulding to the needs and capabilities of each individual leaner. This itself presented a great challenge for eCom: the challenge of delivering the right learner journey for every learner, keeping the learning experience flexible, evolving, live and appropriate at all times. The use of quiz and games helped to keep the learner engaged and aid with understanding and knowledge. eCom also had to ensure that the variety of media and approaches used in the module serviced and promoted engagement with the broad audience and potentially different learner types. By offering a broader mix of media the learner is offered real engagement, always keeping the leaner and learning focused. With a mix of audio, videos, engaging content, stunning use of imagery and innovative quizzes, word searches to gauge the user's knowledge and understanding the end result has been a highly intuitive and insightful resource.

Effective tracking, feedback and evolution of the learner journey is also critical to continued success and again eCom built this into the learning programme adapting to individuals own experiences. Stevie McLaren People Development Manager comments "The Trust is a vast Scotland-wide organisation that needs to consider the learning needs of both our paid staff and our volunteers and the induction eLearning module enabled us to present a holistic view of the Trust and get over the message as to how large and diverse the organisation actually is. "

For The National Trust for Scotland this induction module is truly an example of how best practice eLearning can provide a significant return-on-investment and make for a truly personalised learner journey.
