Over the last few months eCom and SINAPSE have been busy working on creating eLearning material, to explain how medical imaging technologies work, and what they can be used for. SINAPSE is an academic pooling group, involving six Scottish Universities that was formed with support from the Scottish Funding Council and the Chief Scientist Office. A key objective is to make best use of Scottish facilities and expertise in medical imaging, and to develop skills for the next generation of professionals working in this field. Most of those working in SINAPSE are either involved in healthcare delivery or have close links with NHS teams.

There is currently a welcome shift in emphasis in healthcare from the notion that healthcare professionals are responsible for your health and well-being, to the concept that the individual is responsible for their health and well-being, and healthcare professionals are there to help them. This can be described as Patient Centred Care.

For Patient Centred Care, information is needed on a vast range of subjects. The Knowledge Exchange work within SINAPSE has so far taken the form of funding academic, and collaborative PhD studentships and also developing an eLearning Neuroimaging MSc course, hosted within the University of Edinburgh. These will address some of the needs of specialists in healthcare.

To produce the material for this, SINAPSE is working with the award winning company eCom Scotland. eCom is based in Dunfermline and is amongst the eLearning industry leaders.
Professor Dave Wyper, Director SINAPSE comments, "The SINAPSE group includes experts from around Scotland in a range of medical imaging techniques. We have selected the best experts to develop 10 modules that explain in non-technical ways, how medical imaging techniques work and what they can be used for."

Due for completion by the end of March 2012, SINAPSE authors have already learned a great deal from eCom, including skills in 'mindmapping and storyboarding'.
