Coastal has released a new training program to help companies comply with OSHA's updated standard regarding hexavalent chromium. Hexavalent Chromium Awareness is available on DVD and video and covers the health effects of hexchrom, the newly reduced exposure levels, engineering controls and the required medical surveillance of exposed employees.

Hexavalent chromium is a toxic form of the element chromium that is widely used in many industries. Workplace exposure to hexavalent chromium may cause lung cancer; nose, throat and lung irritation; eye damage and skin irritation. Exposure occurs via airborne hexchrom dust and via direct handling of solutions containing the substance.

The updated OSHA standard requires employers to limit eight-hour exposure, perform periodic monitoring under certain conditions, provide appropriate PPE to include respiratory protection when needed, and implement good personal hygiene and housekeeping practices.
