Can learning and development experts conquer highest UK peaks in one day?

London, UKLearning NewsCommelius Solutions

The UK business training provider, Redtray Solutions is partnering with charity Mencap to support people with a learning disability, their families and carers by raising money and awareness .

A team of five L&D professionals are testing their stamina by taking on the Three Peak Challenge next month. They will have to climb the highest peaks of England, Scotland and Wales in less than 24 hours in the hope of raising over £2000 for the charity they believe is closely associated with their profession.

Carl Smith, CEO of Redtray Solutions says, “As L&D experts we support adults in their professional development, not only so they can do their jobs better, but also so they can become more independent and confident in both their working and personal environments. What Mencap does is aligned with our organisation’s morals and beliefs; they are helping disadvantaged adults to gain the confidence they need to live more independent lives. It’s going to be tough but we have the confidence we can conquer those peaks. We have to because the cause we’re doing it for is so important.”

Lloyd Page, a Mencap spokesperson and campaigner who has a learning disability comments on the Redtray Solutions team taking on the Three Peaks Challenge: "I'd like to thank the team at Redtray who are taking on this huge challenge for Mencap. It is a really tough one to complete - if they do it in under one day they will be marvellous. I reckon they will be well able to do it in 24 hours. I hope that by taking on this tough challenge that they will raise lots of money for Mencap."

Mencap has found that most people do not understand what a learning disability is or the effect it can have on that person’s life and the lives of their families. People with a learning disability are among the most excluded and disadvantaged in today’s society. All too often they are ignored.

The Three Peak Challenge team from Redtray wants to help raise awareness about the problems these individuals face every day and to make Mencap’s voice heard among the L&D community.

Rich Pearson, support analyst at Redtray and the leader of the team says, “There’s no better sense of fulfilment and personal achievement than the one you get from supporting a charity so aligned to what you do for a living. We’re asking everyone in the L&D community to get on board, help us spread the word about Mencap’s cause and really show your support by helping us reach, or even exceed, our target. Let’s really make a difference.”

What is a learning disability?

A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – for example household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life.

People with a learning disability tend to take longer to learn and may need support to develop new skills, understand complex information and interact with other people.

The level of support someone needs depends on individual factors, including the severity of their learning disability.
