Virtual College’s new online training course to tackle rising problem of managing diabetes and mental illness
People with type two diabetes have twice the risk of developing dementia. Depression is twice as common in people with diabetes and up to 20% of those with a severe mental illness also have diabetes. To help tackle these issues, Virtual College has released its most recent patient safety training course, ‘The Safe Management of Diabetes, Dementia, Depression and Severe Mental Illness’.
Poorly controlled diabetes can have a serious impact on a person’s safety and well-being. Living with dementia, depression or a severe mental illness can make the management of diabetes difficult.
This course aims to combat this impact by increasing professionals’ understanding of the management of diabetes in people who have a mental illness such as dementia or depression and the impact one condition has on the other. It should take 45 minutes to an hour to complete.
The online training materials were created with subject matter experts from: University of Southampton; University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust; NHS England; Training, Research and Education for Nurses in Diabetes (TREND-UK); Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD) and Diabetes UK.
This course will be available as part of the subscription based National Patient Safety Training Suite developed by Virtual College in partnership with NHS England. The suite has nine online courses and 240,000 registered learners to date.
Subscription to the suite is based on 12 month unlimited training access for all staff. Different options are available for individuals, small, medium and large organisations.
