Virtual College in Ilkley, a pioneer in online learning, has launched a new e-learning module relating to urinary catheterisation - widely regarded as one of the major causes of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) in the NHS.

The keynote aim of the module is to improve catheter care and reduce HCAIs through effective education of healthcare workers to help them better understand and respond to what is a growing problem nationwide.

"The Management of Urinary Catheterisation for Adults" module is being delivered by Virtual College's newly established Healthcare e-Academy.

It is said to be ideally suited to any health workers with a responsibility for urinary catheterisation, including qualified nurses and healthcare support workers.

The module is available free to all health care workers within the Bradford and Airedale NHS areas, including nursing home staff - and for purchase outside the area.

Delivered totally online, it provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of all issues relating to urinary catheterisation.

Areas covered by the module include: Learning objectives, the risk of and indications for urinary catheterisation, assessment of the individual, legal issues, consent and documentation, infection prevention and control, catheter-related equipment and care, lubrication, procedures and troubleshooting.

Virtual College has developed the module in close collaboration with key personnel at Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust - Nurse Consultant/Continence Service Manager Katherine Wilkinson, Senior Continence Nurse Specialist Maria Moor, Practice Development Lead (Adult Health) Carolyn Robinson, and Infection Prevention Control Manager Susan Campbell.

Katherine has over 30 years' nursing experience, with a special interest in urinary catheterisation. She is currently responsible for providing in-house continence and catheter training for health and social care staff across Bradford and Airedale.

Katherine comments: "We are committed to promoting high standards of care and reducing the associated risks of infection for patients who require this procedure, at the same time providing flexible training that is easily accessible for 'hard to reach' groups of staff - for example, night workers and care home staff.

"We are keen to encourage qualified nurses who are already experienced in catheterisation to undertake the module as an update. Additionally, healthcare workers or nurses who are new to the procedure will ideally undertake the module, as well as attending a taught study day. There is also the potential for student nurses to complete the module and we are currently in discussion with university tutors regarding this possibility."

The content of the course has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines.

With over 70 interactive screens with multiple components - including video - it is anticipated that the course will take some two to three hours to complete. On completion of the module and an associated online auto-marking assessment, participants will be able to print a certificate of successful completion.

The module also provides links to bolt-on resources, including the recently produced Skills for Health continence competences and RCN catheter guidelines for nurses.

The Healthcare e-Academy has been established to deliver specialist online training programmes relating to clinical and non-clinical subjects relevant to the healthcare sector. It has grown from the tremendously successful TIGER e-Academy which focused on delivery of data protection and information governance related programmes.

Virtual College's Lean Healthcare Academy is already successfully delivering Lean training and online learning programmes to Acute, Primary Care and Mental Health Trusts to support them in adopting and implementing Lean working practices as a foundation stone for sustainable service transformation.

Virtual College now has over 180,000 online learners, over 100,000 of those in the NHS and local Councils, via its virtual learning environment.
