The new Learning and Performance Institute and Lord Robert Winston take centre stage at LEARNING LIVE

The new Learning and Performance Institute (LPI) officially launched in Birmingham yesterday (14 September 2011). Formerly, the IITT, the new Institute was introduced during an opening presentation by Chairman, Donald H Taylor.

During the presentation, Mr Taylor described the LPI as a 21st century Institute which would act as a guide for L&D professionals rather than gatekeepers for the industry. He said: “The Learning and Performance Institute will provide a pathway for an individual’s development in the learning sector and provide them with access to the knowledge and resources they need to achieve their career objectives, rather than hurdles or hoops to jump through.”

Mr Taylor went on to reveal the Institute’s plans to launch an L&D road map for its members, which went beyond a list of qualifications or skill sets, to plan out a clear career route to specific jobs roles in L&D. The road map is set to launch next year.

The unveiling of the new Institute began the second day of the LEARNING LIVE event which would later see Lord Robert Winston take to the stage to deliver an insightful keynote on the connection between the ‘human brain and learning’. Already regarded as a world renowned speaker, Lord Winston further enhanced his reputation as he took delegates on a journey through the science behind learning, examining how the brain evolved to think, learn and communicate.

Lord Winston used a range of techniques to engage audiences, with one of the more surreal moments involving genetically modified mice running on treadmills. The experiment clearly demonstrated how a slight change in genetics could dramatically impact on our ability to perform.

Further highlights of the event included the LEARNING LIVE Exhibition, a gala networking dinner and over 15 focus sessions dedicated to workplace learning.
Coverage from the event, including Lord Winston’s keynote presentation will be published on the Learning and Performance Institute website.
