Junction-18 on Powering Up Persuasion with Scenario-based Learning

LondonLearning NewsJunction-18

Junction-18 are returning to Learning Technologies. Last time, their goal was to share experience and insights into the industries most explosive growth areas – Gamification. At Learning Technologies 2017, J18 are back to take what visitors have learned so far, and to provide the tools to ‘Power-up’ persuasion with scenario-based, immersive gaming.

“We have all suffered ‘Death by PowerPoint’ at some point in our lives. With today’s technological and methodological advances in eLearning, this is no longer acceptable… but you know that.” Gerry Doyle, J18 Managing Director.

The use of scenarios and role-play has been a mainstay in classroom and face-to-face learning. And with good reason… it’s a highly effective way to learn. There is a growing need to discover how we can effectively transfer this highly beneficial approach, into the digital format without losing learner engagement and interaction.

It’s taken a lot of hard work but J18 are now making serious headway in this area. J18 refer to this new avenue in highly immersive, scenario-based learning as ‘Persuasive Gaming’.

“Persuasive games are particularly valuable in the presentation of tacit knowledge. Tacit knowledge is the type of knowledge that is difficult to transfer from one person to another by means of writing it down or verbalising it. As such, role-play & scenario-based learning through persuasive games, lends themselves well to sharing human expertise.” Christopher Sanderson, J18 Creative & Communications.

J18 have found that ‘Persuasive Games’ can range from demonstrating practical skills and processes, such as cooking or construction; to visualising soft skills, such as customer service and communication lead interactions.

In using this new type of scenario-based learning, J18 have been able to convert tacit knowledge (i.e. human expertise) to explicit knowledge, in a usable form for clients. In doing so, this is producing the highest possible return for each client’s respective business.

Having established a winning formula, J18 would now like to share this with this year’s attendees at Learning Technologies 2017. J18 will be at Stand D7 to give advice and guidance on how to create awesome scenario-based learning; includes topics such as:

  • Creating and developing a narrative.
  • The use of characters & audio voiceover.
  • Providing user interaction through decision-making.
  • Embedding and reinforcing Learning.
  • Tracking and measuring performance.
  • Traditional ROI & human metrics.

Culminating in a seminar by Junction-18’s Managing Director, Gerry Doyle will be using real-life examples to show the possibilities in persuasive gaming and looking at how this can improve the ROI, whilst simultaneously providing a more powerful, immersive and enriching, learning experience.
