IMI welcomes call from Which? for an industry wide qualification for all automotive technicians

In response to today's (23 August) Which? report into garage servicing, The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has had the status raised of its Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) scheme. ATA is the only industry backed, independent accreditation scheme that specifically tests the current competency of technicians in the automotive retail sector.

The scheme, launched in 2005, is open to franchised and independent garage technicians and is backed by the majority of vehicle manufacturers and some independent service and repair organisations, as well as consumer groups.  To date over 24,000 individuals have passed rigorous assessment proving their competence, giving reassurance to customers as well as raising the levels of professionalism within the industry.

Today's report from Which? clearly shows that there is strong consumer support for accredited individuals with over half of those surveyed deeming an individual's commitment to a code of conduct as important when getting their car serviced.  Codes of ethical conduct are integral parts of both the ATA scheme and membership of the IMI. Registered ATA individuals and IMI members have shown a commitment to best practice and continuing professional development, for the good of their customers and the industry as a whole.

Commenting on the report, Sarah Sillars OBE FIMI, Executive Chair of the IMI said:
"Automotive Technician Accreditation was developed five years ago in direct response to the sector's requirement for a means of identifying skilled technicians and now over 24,000 individuals have achieved the standard.  We welcome the call by Which? to see a recognised, industry-wide qualification introduced for all technicians and we would encourage the industry to support  the IMI's voluntary ATA scheme to demonstrate its commitment to improving customer service within our sector and in turn elevate the status of a highly important and credible profession."

The IMI's campaign, 'You know you're OK with ATA', helps motorists find their nearest garage employing ATA registered technicians to service, repair and maintain their car. Consumers can search on-line at www.OKwithATA.com
