More than 20,000 students of the IMI are being given the opportunity to obtain a free NUS Associate Card*, which entitles the holder to significant savings on clothes, music, driving lessons and insurance, whilst they are studying towards a national qualification.

To qualify, candidates must apply for membership of the IMI at Affiliate entry level, offering recognition from the Institute for a fee of as little as £20 per annum. Once students have completed their qualification, they are entitled to join as full members.

Nigel Beaven, director of marketing, IMI, commented:

"We are continually looking for new ways to assist students working towards IMI qualifications. This new initiative will give students a wide range of benefits from both IMI membership and the NUS, that they would not have had access to before, which should make a real difference during their learning."

In an effort to further boost its awareness and profile within the motor sector, the IMI has also launched its first industry newsletter. Torque will be published three times per year and distributed to manufacturers, franchised dealerships, independent service and repair outlets, colleges of further education, training providers and relevant industry bodies.

Stuart Brooks, Head of Public Relations, IMI and editor of the six-page newsletter, commented:

"Issues such as accreditation, skills development and recognition are very topical in the industry and are at the heart of the IMI's mission to raise professional standards. The launch of Torque will bring a fresh perspective to our role and activity for the benefit of stakeholders across the industry and we anticipate that it will generate additional interest and engagement with the Institute."
