IMI members show their pride

A campaign launched by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), to raise the status of skilled individuals has been boosted with the help of the Engineering Council UK (ECUK), of which the IMI is a licensed member.

One thousand members of the IMI have now gained the internationally recognised title of Engineering Technician (EngTech), their names being added to the ECUK Register of Engineers.

The inclusion of this significant number of IMI members on the Register of Engineers adds considerable weight to the Institute's "Proud to be professional" campaign, launched at this year's Motor Show, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of 'ethical competence' in delivering long term business success.

The Engineering Council (ECUK) regulates the engineering profession in the UK and represents the interests of UK engineers internationally. Its mission is to set and maintain standards of professional competence and ethics for engineers, technologists and technicians and license institutions deemed competent to promote and uphold these standards.

Members of the IMI who possess its own specialist automotive engineering grades, Certificated Automotive Engineer (CAE) and Advanced Automotive Engineer (AAE), may be eligible for Engineering Technician status. Additionally, IMI members who have achieved Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) status at either Diagnostic or Master Technician level may be able to apply.

The IMI is licensed by ECUK to assess applicants for EngTech registration and monitor the conduct and continuing professional development (CPD) of those who hold the award. The IMI's CPD scheme promotes opportunities for members to keep up-to-date in their respective fields and improve their individual skills.

Commented Sarah Sillars, IMI chief executive:

"Achieving pride through the recognition of individual professionalism is at the heart of our campaign to raise standards and improve public perceptions. The IMI's association with the ECUK gives power to our elbow and we are delighted at the response from our technical members who have sought this additional status."
