A new report published by the all-in-one learning and development platform Bridge, sponsored by HR.com, provides an in-depth look into the factors driving employee development and upskilling.

Research in the report, entitled “The Future of Coaching and Mentoring 2024”, is based on a survey conducted by HR.com of over 300 HR professionals across a broad range of industries. The data compiled provides up-to-date insights and draws on previous years' findings to highlight key learning and talent development trends and forecast what's ahead.

Inside, readers will find a wealth of insights highlighting the relationship between coaching and mentoring and employee development and business performance. The data shows that for 68% of organizations, coaching and mentoring are set to become more significant priorities to help employees reach their potential.

Furthermore, responses highlight the critical part that managers play as enablers of employee development and the benefits associated with equipping them with skills such as providing feedback and guiding conversations.

While many organizations recognize its importance, there's a significant gap in training and support for coaching skills. The research shows that despite 67% of organizations agreeing that managers are key enablers of coaching, only 45% say they take time to develop their skills. What’s more, 25% lack coaching and mentoring programs altogether.

Nichole Marconi, VP of Marketing at Bridge, said, “People managers are among the greatest allies when it comes to employee development and upskilling. To link coaching and mentoring to organizational success, managers need time and support to develop these crucial skills.”

Within the report, L&D professionals will find a number of techniques to develop and support people managers as well as practical examples of coaching and mentoring best practices organizations are using to drive long-term success.

Additional research findings explore:

  • The factors driving an uptick in coaching and mentoring programs
  • L&D technologies that support a coaching culture
