Three of Aurion's employees (Instructional Designer, Sandy Kane; Applications Developer, David Anderson and Director, Ciaran O'Hare) are taking 'time to read' with local Key Stage Two school children (eight to ten year olds). The volunteers each visit a local primary school for one hour per week and spend time working one to one with school children, helping them learn to read confidently.

Speaking about the initiative, Ciaran O'Hare, Director of Aurion Learning said,

"We are pleased to be taking part in the 'Time to Read' programme. According to the National Literary Trust (2009) one person in six has difficulty with reading and writing. Clearly this has negative implications for the individuals, our society and our economy.

Through the 'Time to Read' initiative, we are trying to improve children's literacy at a young age and help children become confident readers. So far, the feedback from pupils has been really positive and we think this experience not only enables them to improve their reading skills, but also helps them develop confidence and better communication skills."

Time to Read is part of the 'Time to' programmes developed by Business in the Community and local Education and Library Boards. The 'Time to' programme includes Time to Read, Time 2 Count and Time to Compute and aims to help improve literacy, numeracy and computing skills in local primary schools.

Aurion Learning is one of 48 of Northern Ireland's leading companies participating in the 'Time to' programmes, across 63 schools across Northern Ireland. These programmes have won both the Belfast Telegraph Business and NICVA/Camelot Link awards for Outstanding Community Involvement.
