Turnitin Solutions Evolve in an Ever-Changing Academic Integrity Landscape

Utrecht, NetherlandsLearning NewsOEB Exhibition

New and innovative technology: Turnitin continues to build on solutions that support academic integrity, authentic writing, and grading across multiple disciplines.

Recognised as the most effective tool for plagiarism prevention, Turnitin is the worldwide leader in providing holistic solutions for authentic student writing and valuable instructor feedback. Turnitin is passionate about encouraging academic integrity and championing the innovative and effective use of its platform to support student learning.

Actively investing in cutting-edge technologies, in October 2018, Turnitin acquired feedback and assessment platform, Gradescope. Gradescope addresses the rising challenges that both students and educators face in academia, offering effective tools to support time-pressed educators in grading paper-based exams, online homework, and programming projects on one platform, particularly for STEM courses.

“Bringing Gradescope into the Turnitin family allows us to realise our mission across more subjects, with more instructors and students than ever before,” said Turnitin CEO, Chris Caren.

Being at the forefront of integrity solutions for over 20 years, Turnitin is developing a feature in Gradescope to help instructors determine how similar students’ programming code is. The Code Similarity feature is currently in beta and will be available publicly soon.

In March 2019, Turnitin responded to a growing customer demand to combat alternative forms of academic misconduct. Its newest solution, Authorship, is the first education technology product developed to address contract cheating.

“We’re making sure that our solutions evolve with the ever-changing academic integrity landscape,” said Turnitin CPO, Val Schreiner, “We are expanding our capabilities to help both instructors and investigators proactively address contract cheating and continuing to grow our databases with additional relevant content in even more languages.”

Developed in partnership with university faculty and experts from around the world, Authorship reduces the uncertainty and administrative burden of investigating potential contract cheating cases.

Turnitin asserts that integrity in education is more than simply checking work for originality. It is actively working to optimise the readability, configurability, and accuracy of its tools to spark teachable moments around the critical importance of integrity in education and research.

On November 27 - 29, Turnitin will visit the OEB conference to share insight into how Turnitin’s innovative technology can be used to prevent academic misconduct, provide multi-disciplinary feedback, and enhance academic skills. The team can be found at stand D21 and will be ready to discuss Turnitin’s newest technologies.

Ahead of the OEB conference, attendees are invited to learn more about “The Challenge of Contract Cheating” faced by academic institutions around the world: https://go.turnitin.com/OEB-Challenge-2019.
