Legal staff more open to using learning technology than other sectors

London, UKLearning NewsCommelius Solutions

Legal staff show more interest and readiness when it comes to using technology for learning and development than employees in other industries, according to recent study.

The research, conducted by Towards Maturity (the not-for-profit benchmarking organisation) and training provider Commelius Solutions, is a part of the ‘21st century learning for 21st century legal firms’ campaign. It collates feedback from 21 UK legal organisations and compares it with L&D insights from businesses in other industries.

76% of learners in legal sector show positive attitude towards learning technology compared with 56% of staff in other industries. According to the study, they are nearly 20% less likely to be reluctant when it comes to using technology for learning purposes than in other professional services organisations.

‘This is great news. These statistics indicate there’s lots of learning and development potential in the legal sector and great opportunity for positive change. One of the most common barriers to adopting learning technology in business is the lack of enthusiasm from staff who are disinclined to embrace it“, comments Vicky Jones, Managing Director at Commelius Solutions.

The study also revealed that legal organisations also have a 20% advantage when it comes to their staff’s skills in managing their own training. That’s 67% vs. 47% in other professional services firms. “Again, that’s extremely optimistic”, says Jones, “This study shows that  employees at legal firms are clearly ready to embrace learning supported by technology, and that’s what most modern organisations want – a positive attitude. That’s the first step to business transformation”.

More results from the study will be released by Towards Maturity and Commelius next week in the whitepaper titled ‘21st century learning for 21st century legal firms’. It’ll offer those working in legal sector L&D an opportunity to compare their organisations with the maturity of learning and development of other professional services firms; and gain practical hints and tips from top learning organisations in their industry
